Barry H. Soloway founded Management Pragmatics LLC in 1999 as a consultancy through which he serves high tech startups and turnarounds in roles that range from due diligence, to mentoring to full time interim executive positions. With extensive technical and general management accomplishments in the telecom, optics and semiconductor industries, his core competence is Product Realization: helping companies cross the chasm that separates a proof-of-concept from an economically viable commercial product.
During the past twelve years, he held COO or Sr. VP Product Realization with four young companies, three of which remain viable today: Continuum Photonics (piezoelectric beam-steering optical switch), Glimmerglass Networks (MEMS-based optical switch), Novalux (semiconductor lasers) and Sourcemine (Internet-based collaboration workspace). He is currently serving as consultant to alternative energy startups (small wind, solar and miniature fuel cell), and as a Mentor with the Arizona Center for Innovation.
Prior to founding Management Pragmatics, Barry served as Sr. VP Operations & Development with TimePlex, a turnaround with sales of $175 million. Manufacturing voice and data switches and providing Network Operations Centers, this mature company lost its competitive advantage. Barry refocused, resized, and rebuilt worldwide engineering, marketing, manufacturing and quality operations, acquired and integrated a young company having a gap-filling product line, and confronted the challenges of emerging technologies and rapidly evolving markets.
Earlier, as Division General Manager with ITT, he started up two of the five divisions at its Advanced Technology Center, achieving a high success rate in technology development and transfer within a multi-national environment. Barry began his career with Bell Labs, leading the development of many of the first integrated circuits to be employed in telecommunication systems. He earned an MSEE from New York University with specialization in solid-state physics, and a BSEE from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
